I love playing chess, and one common cliché is that the mark of chess players is that they can see a number of moves ahead. That may be true in some simple positions with very limited number of pieces on the board, but the reality is that even the best chess player cannot calculate so many moves ahead.

What skilled chess players do is that they learn to anticipate an opponent’s next moves. And, to predict what another person will do next, a player must develop the ability to adopt another person’s perspective and infer what action they are likely to take.

Behavioral scientists call this this ability to see from another viewpoint the “theory of mind.” It’s an ability that is essential to exercising empathy and building healthy social relationships. Curious how many of our XD people play chess, and if they don’t, should we enroll them in chess classes as a way to improve they ability to empathize? Just a thought.
